How We Reviewed

There are tons of electric cars, but we tried to be very analytical and thorough. We read online reviews and then tested tens of cars before we could cross-reference our own opinions to that of other sites and users to conclude our small list. Everything you read will be unbiased and completely objective except for whenever we point out what was our impression.

Overall Price Range of These Electric Cars

There is a perfect option for everyone. Don't be baffled by some of the highest prices as more money doesn't necessarily mean better performance. Choose accordingly to your own needs and requirements. Sure, some of the more expensive cars will perform better than the cheaper models but who knows, maybe you'll be surprised with the EV car you end up buying!

Hyundai's motto regarding the Ioniq electric is that the driver will drive it for its style but love it for its efficiency, and this couldn't be any more true as this model perfectly combines an electrically powered vehicle with utter comfort and luxury making it the best longest range electric car for the fans of the Korean brand.

The 2018 Ioniq features an 88kW (118hp) electric motor with automatic transmission and 215 lb-ft torque. It is equipped with a 28-kWh battery providing the vehicle with a mile range of 124. That being said you can expect to get a lot of riding time from it but don't expect wild performance as its 0-60mph time is around 8 seconds which still is pretty good considering this is an electric car. Being electric the Ioniq features a big battery which is going to limit your storage space at the rear side of the car opposed to the hybrid model which is much more spacious.

According to our test drive, the car rides very well, performs great at turns, and has good brakes. The only thing that kind of bothered us was that the "base" package is a little too basic. Better go for the pricier version as the seats are upgraded to leather and are heated.

PROS

  • Good performance
  • Great at turns and brake responsiveness
  • Tons of "smart" interior features

CONS

  • Limited luggage space
  • The base package isn't that great

Even though we personally didn't like the design of the exterior, the Bolt managed to give us a pretty good impression. The base model features a 150kW (200hp) electric motor with a 266 lb-ft torque and a 60-kWh battery. You would expect a family car to be kind of slow, but you'd be wrong as the Bolt has a 6.8-second 0-60mph time.

The brakes are impeccable, and so is the steering. The mile range is 238! The car drives perfectly and is very spacious with a good interior design which is however slightly "outdated" as plenty of the materials are made out of plastic.

All pros aside, the only big thing we found atrocious is the absence of GPS as the provided board-screen doesn't feature one. It does let you mirror your phone's maps though.

PROS

  • Good acceleration
  • Spacious
  • Extremely long driving range

CONS

  • Looks more like a mini van than a subcompact
  • Cheap materials used in the interior
  • Absence of GPS

Featuring a 170hp electric motor and a net torque of 184 lb-ft, the 2018 i3 is BMW's longest range electric car to date. A 94-kWh battery powers the vehicle, and it delivers a mile range of 114 which is pretty good considering the car's specs. You'll notice that the 0-60mph time is around 7 seconds which is reasonable for a car of that size.

Moving on to the interior, you get lots of space, especially in the driver's row. Push the seats a bit to the front, and everyone will be perfectly comfortable. We particularly loved the color scheme even though it has nothing to do with BMW's usual design choices.

All around the i3 drives great and is one of the safest electric cars you can buy, but the price is fairly high. Remember, this is a BMW we are talking about!

PROS

  • Beautiful interior design
  • Spacious
  • Good acceleration

CONS

  • Expensive
  • Could have a longer range

Moving on to the EV king, the Tesla Model 3 will without the smallest doubt be the longest range electric car with sports performance you've ever drove. It rocks a 258hp (192kW) electric motor and which is powered by a 50-kWh battery to provide a 220-mile range! Combine all that with Tesla's craftsmanship and you get a luxurious car with a 5.6 second 0-60mph time and a 130mph top speed.

Of course the Model 3 drives and feels amazing with supreme acceleration, steering, and braking performance. Also, there's a ton of the latest gadgets found in the interior. The base package offers top performance version which has a 3.3 second 0-60mph time and 155mph top speed with upgraded breaks.

PROS

  • Sport performance
  • High-tech interior
  • Extremely long range

CONS

  • Superchargers aren't free
  • Requires much attention (frequent service and calibrations)

The 2018 Soul EV features a 109hp (81.4kW) electric motor with a torque of 210 lb-ft and is powered by a 90kW battery with a 30-kWh output. First things first, don't expect this car to go fast as its top speed is just 90mph. Regarding acceleration, the Soul EV is below average as it has an 11.2-second 0-60mph time.

All that taken into consideration, the mile range is 111 which on the one hand makes it the longest range electric car of Kia but it does still lack behind compared to its rivals. Moving to fuel economy, the car is extremely cost-efficient which combined with its nice aesthetics make it a worthy EV choice.

Even though we found our driving session smooth we did notice the absence of automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control both of which certainly are big safety drawbacks.

PROS

  • Nice aesthetics
  • Extreme cost-efficiency

CONS

  • Poor performance
  • An absence of important safety measures

The only changes made in the new 2018 Focus Electric model are the addition of a new color option and the expanded mile range to 115. It features a 143hp (107kW) electric motor. Both the outer and interior designs are looking nice with the car emitting this sporty vibe all while being completely quiet when driving.

It probably is the longest range electric car as it is a bit further compared to most of Ford's competitors but there is one thing we didn't like at all, and that is the limited cargo space. Everything on the Focus Electric is above average while the driving experience is smooth. But, judging by the lack of new features, you can quickly realize that Ford has unfortunately given up on this model.

PROS

  • Long mile range
  • Good performance
  • Nice design

CONS

  • Lack of upgrades
  • Limited cargo space

Tesla is known for its high-performance electric sport cars and the Model S series is no exception. The 100D features dual 259hp (193kW) electric motors for a total of 518 horsepower which is "fueled" by a 100-kWh battery and get this, it has a 334 mile range! Starting still, it can reach the 60mph mark in just 4.4 seconds while its top speed is 155mph.

Just to get a grasp of how luxurious both the exterior and interior designs are, the 100D is often compared to Audi A8, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the BMW's 7 series. Driving it feels amazingly smooth and comfortable as the interior is packed with parts of the latest technology. With this mile range the 100D becomes Tesla's longest range electric car to date!

PROS

  • Huge battery and top-level fuel-efficiency
  • Extreme performance
  • Great looks

CONS

  • Very expensive
  • Doesn't support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Adopting the Scirocco's design we all know and love, the 2018 e-Golf remains the same, performance-wise, as last year's model. This means that the car features a 134hp (100kW) electric motor with a 214 lb-ft torque. It's powered by a 35.8-kWh battery, providing a 125-mile range. This allows it to compete with BMW's i3 and the Chevy Bolt EV, making it Volkswagen's longest range electric car at that price point.

Regarding the actual driving experience, throughout our road trip, the e-Golf performed great and smooth being able to handle sharp turns and quick braking with ease. The 0-60mph time is 9.6 seconds, and the top speed is only 85mph so don't expect to go racing with it!

PROS

  • Looks great
  • Plenty of cargo space
  • Drives smooth

CONS

  • Low performance
  • Price is unreasonable

The Japanese have made it again! The new Nissan Leaf is considered a safe bet by EV fans and for good reason. The redesigned 2018 model features a 147hp (110kW) electric motor with a 236 lb-ft torque which is being powered by a larger-capacity 40-kWh battery able to provide a 150-mile range making the Leaf Nissan's longest range electric car by far.

According to our test, we managed to get a bit more than 167 miles out of the car. Even though the driving experience is very pleasant, comfortable, and smooth, the performance could be just a bit better as the Leaf's 0-60mph time was 7.8 seconds but remains adequate. The only drawback is the handling when turning which felt a bit bland.

Last but not least. We instantly fell in love with both the exterior and the interior design not to mention how cheap this car is to use and maintain!

PROS

  • Looks great
  • Drives smooth
  • Good mile range

CONS

  • Could perform better
  • Mediocre handling/turning

The Verdict - Which is The Best Longest Range Electric Car?

Picking out the absolute winner is impossible for us, so we are going with two options. First up is the Chevy Bolt as the mile range you get for this price point s absurd, in the good sense.

Next up, is the Nissan Leaf. The previous models sold as much as all the rest EV's available in the market put together, and we easily understand why. The car performs great, has an incredibly low cost of usage and maintenance, and most of all looks perfect and is the longest range electric car currently available at this incredibly low price point!
